Domestic Violence & Sexual Assault Shelter

Crisis Line #: 1 (800) 382-7294

The crisis shelter was constructed in 1997 as a safe place for victims of domestic violence and sexual assualt to reside when by no fault of their own they found themselves with no safe place to reside. Without a secure place of living the ability of families to grow and succeed comes to a screeching halt.  SWFLC has served 34 victims of domestic violence and/or sexual assualt and their children with over 1,800 bednights of shelter this year.

Shelter services are provided twenty-four hours per day, every day of the year.  Shelter services are accessible by individuals calling the hotline 1 (800) 382-7294, the main phone line 1 (573) 649-3731, referrals from law enforcement, other service agencies, or by coming into the office. Arrangements are then made for the individual to be transported to the shelter, or picked up at another safe location.  Emergency clothing, food, and/or transportation is also provided to victims as needed.

Education and information is provided by trained staff members about how batterers maintain control and dominance over their victims; the need to hold batterers accountable for their actions; the recognition that individuals victimized by domestic violence are responsible for their own life decisions and that batterers are responsible for their violent behavior.  Education is also provided about the role of society in perpetuating violence against women and the social change necessary to eliminate violence against women, including the elimination of discrimination based on race, color, gender, sexual orientation, age, disabilities, economic or educational status, religion, and national origin.  This is accomplished by staff members providing group educational sessions, as well as working one on one with individual residents.  Residents are not required to attend these sessions.
