Batterer Intervention
Thirty-Third Circuit Collaboration
The Batterer Intervention Collaboration between Susanna Wesley Family Learning Center, Probation and Parole, and the 33rd Circuit Court began in 2002 because of the high rate of recidivism among men convicted of domestic assault. All too often, men residing in Mississippi and Scott Counties were charged with and convicted of domestic assault, fined and released on probation, and then returned to court with another charge filed by yet another victim. The 33rd Circuit Court partnered with Susanna Wesley Family Learning Center for seed funding from the Missouri Office of State Courts Administrator for a 33rd Circuit Batterer Intervention Program with the Office of Probation and Parole serving as the liaison between the program provider and the court. The program was designed to meet both the national and state standards of batterer intervention programs. Quarterly meetings are held between collaborative partners to review procedure and correct in any procedural issues.
The Thirty-Third Circuit, as a member of the Batterer Intervention Coalition, believes this program holds batterers accountable, significantly lowers the recidivism rate, and works to prevent new incidents of domestic assault because it is now known that batterers in Mississippi and Scott Counties are held to high standards and unyielding consequences.
