Summer & Evening Food Programs

The Summer & Evening Food Program is designed to provide nutritious meals to children that live in poverty stricken areas of Mississippi County.  We have two school districts in the county that meets the free-reduced lunch requirements; therefore, every youth in the county is eligible to participate in the youth program.  The Summer & Evening Food Program received the U.S.D.A Regional Award in 2007 and the Victory Hunger Award in 2005.  This program also received local recognition from the Mississippi County Times Newspaper and Standard Democrat Newspaper on several occasions, and special recognition from the Charleston Housing Authority. 

The Summer Food Program has 7 feeding sites, and the central kitchen is located at the Bowden Center in Charleston, Missouri; which is operated by the Charleston Housing Authority. The Summer Food Program has served over 575 meals per day in 2011.  This program is in operation from May 31 - August 12 ; Monday - Friday, from 11:30 am to 1:00pm.  
 
The Evening Food Program provides meals and activities for school age youth 5-18 years old.  There is only one Evening Food site, and it is located at the Bowden Center in Charleston, Missouri.    Along with a meal being provides, tutoring, basketball, softball, leadership classes, and anti-drug programs are being offere at the Evening and Summer Food Program site for the youth.  The Evening Food Program has served over 130 meals per day in 2011 and provided youth services to over 25 youth per day in 2011.  This program is conducted during the regular school year on Monday - Friday from 3:00pm to 6:00pm at the Bowden Center.
