Elder Abuse

Crisis Line #:  (800)382-7294

Because society does not view older individuals as sexual beings often sexual abuse is missed.  Older victims may not be believed if they report stalking, especially if the victim has dementia, or psychaitric disabilities.  Dating abuse and domestic violence are often dismissed as society has the misconception the older individuals do not date, and that domestic violence lessens, or disappears later in life.

Susanna Wesley is leading Missouri's first multi county initiative to provide victims of elder abuse services and protection. The Elder Abuse Program's purpose  is to enhance and expand services to provide victims of elder abuse, neglect, and financial exploitation with the protection and services they need to pursue safe and healthy lives and enable communities to hold offenders accountable.   This initiative is an expertly trained coalition working together with U.S. Department of Justice, Mississippi and Scott County Prosecuting Attorneys, Victim Advocates, Law Enforcement, the Southeast Area Agency on Aging, and Adult Protective Services. The target population for the Elder Abuse Program is comprised of residents 50 years of age and over of Scott and Mississippi counties located in Missouri.

The expected outcomes of this program is to train a minimum of 116 Law Enforecment professionals with regard to their specific service area to enhance their ability to reach and address elder abuse, neglect, and financial exploitation including domestic violence, dating violence, and stalking, strengthen collaborations among the four partners and judicial circuit comprising 11 agencies to respect the roles and responsibilities of each agency to provide all victims of elder abuse with a coordinated community response, and to be of service to more victims of elder abuse.
